My Word for 2018 (better late than never)
I am usually right there with the goal oriented crowd – coming up with a word for the year and setting some new goals by January 1st. But this year has been a little different because I found a new resource that completely changed my perspective on goal setting. And it was using this new resource that I was finally able to find my word for 2018.
Who made up the rule that you had to have the perfect plan in motion by January 1??
Thank goodness for that! (since it will be February in 2 days….)
It all started with my search for a planner. Every November, I find myself on a scavenger hunt for a new planner. In the midst of my search this year….I kept coming across PowerSheets. It really peaked my interest, but when I looked at it closer, I realized it was NOT a traditional planner….Lara Casey (the creator) describes it as an intentional goal planner.
Although I really wanted to get PowerSheets , I knew I needed a planner with a calendar. So I went ahead and bought The Living Well Planner (which I am LOVING).
BUT….I still kept looking at PowerSheets….
I didn’t know if I could justify buying it since I already paid for a planner. (Remember, I am a stay at home mom.)
But I kept going back to it…
Goal Setting Series
Then, Lara Casey published her annual Goal Setting Series on her blog. And friends, I have to tell you….this five part series changed a LOT for me.
I’ve been to conferences; listened to podcasts; read blogs; and participated in webinars….ALL about goal setting….but this was different. Lara’s enthusiasm for what she does just jumps right off the page. And even more than that, her love for the LORD is beyond obvious!
I found myself looking forward to each and every post! (She even recorded herself reading the blog posts…and as a busy mom….I absolutely loved the option of listening to the post while I made beds and folded clothes.)
Lara just put a whole new spin on goal setting and it really had me thinking!
The blog series was so thought provoking, that I caved and bought the Powersheets. (Of course…by the time I decided to buy them FOR REAL….she SOLD OUT of her 2018 One-Year Dated Powersheets. So, instead, I bought the 2018 Six-Month Undated Powersheets.)
Let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed! The goal setting series on Lara’s blog was amazing, and if your budget won’t allow for you to purchase PowerSheets then grab a notebook and at least go through that series.
However, the blog series was just a sampling of what she includes in Powersheets. Even though I debated whether or not to purchase my own PowerSheets….I am SO GLAD I bought them. It is kind of like having a life coach in a book!

Cultivate What Matters
In all that she does, the message Lara consistently shares, is that we need to “cultivate what matters” in our life.
I think we all “know” that….but when we really stop and think about our lives….are we TRULY cultivating what matters? Do we even know what really matters?
My favorite part of my Powersheets, is the section entitled “The Big Picture”. Lara encourages you to think about what really matters by asking yourself some questions.
“Where do you want to be when you are 80?”
This question was so thought provoking for me.
I reflected on the lives of those around me who are actually in their 80s (including both of my grandmothers).
I thought about those people I look up to.
What is it that makes them special to me? What is it that admire about them?
As I thought through this, slowly but surely, I was able to create a picture of what I would like my life to look like when I am 80. You want to hear what I came up with?
When I am 80, I want to…
- be celebrating my 60th wedding anniversary with Brandon. I want our relationship to be as full of love, laughter, and happiness as it was when I was fifteen. (That’s when we started dating.)
- see my boys be Godly men, married to Christian women, raising their kids to love Christ (who raise their kids to love Christ…who raise their kids to love Christ….and so on)
- be healthy and active enough to go and do things…to serve.
- have enough spunk to make people smile!
When I try to envision myself at 80….I dream of being a little 80 year old lady (probably slightly hunched over with glasses and a little white bob), with ALL of my family sitting around, laughing and sharing memories.
“What is your definition of success?”
Thinking about my life at 80 made the big picture of my life so much clearer. When I thought about what will be important at 80…I didnt think about a large bank account….the size of my house…house chores that did or didn’t get done…about my career……and I definitely didn’t think about social media.
As I pondered what I would value at 80, the true definition of success in my life became obvious:
Pointing others to Christ in the ways that I love my husband, my boys, and others;
being “famous” in my own home and leaving a legacy of faith.
My Word for 2018
One night, I was working on my Powersheets in the two youngest boys’ room while waiting for my three year old to get to sleep. (That is another story for another day.) Honestly, this was about the only time I could find to work on my Powersheets. #momlife
On the floor, working by the light of a night light, I completed the section entitled “Choose your Word”.
For the past two years I have chosen a fruit of the spirit for my word….and I was leaning toward “kindness” for this year. (kind in my marriage, my parenting, to myself, and to others) But for some reason, I just felt like there was another word.
Now yall, I know it is just “a word” but I am a bit of a perfectionist…..to a fault…..and I didn’t want to pick the “wrong word”. (I realize this is a bigger issue that maybe we can explore another day. Don’t laugh.)
Using the questions previously stated, along with a number of other exercises and guiding questions included in the book, I looked for themes or things that stood out. And then, right there in the dark room….I don’t really know how to explain it…the word just came to me:
I believe the Holy Spirit was speaking to my heart because suddenly I was flooded with the idea of an orchestra. Before I knew it, I had written two whole pages of thoughts that, I know for a fact, did not come from ME!
Of course, I took a moment to google the word harmony (you knew I would) and one of the definitions truly blew me away because it is EXACTLY what I need in my life.
a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts
Most of the time I just feel frazzled…overwhelmed….and discouraged! Can you relate?
The thought of arranging the parts of my life in a way that creates harmony, is truly music to my ears! (See what I did there?? LOL)
Orchestra of Life
This beautiful illustration of harmony changed my whole perspective for this year…for my life… and in the next few posts, I want to share with you what God is teaching me about the “orchestra of life”.
So be sure to stay tuned!!! I am so excited to tell you all about it!
Did you choose a word for this year? (It’s not too late!!) I would love to hear it.
Please feel free to share it in the comments!
